Description
An authentic turning point in violin composing, the Violin Concertos of Giovanni Battista Viotti (1755-1824) combine the qualities of phrasing, cantability and technical innovation that paved the way for a revolution of the solo form. The purpose of this series is to recover the artistic value of compositions traditionally appreciated for their didactic efficacy, but which nevertheless profoundly inspired the greatest musicians of the time, including Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven, as well as the generations of violinists that followed Each composition is offered in two editions: the score with complete orchestral material (available for lease) and the reduction for violin and piano. Careful attention to the manuscript sources and the addition of arcs and fingerings provide both students and concert performers the opportunity to rediscover, study, and perform an invaluable repertoire that epitomizes the best of the Italian school of violin. The Concerto No. 3 in A Major WI:3 (G. 25) is the first ever composed by Viotti, at the age of fourteen. With its complex publishing history, this work already clearly manifests the composer’s style, his mastery of the technical resources of the instrument, and his exquisite ability to dialogue with the orchestra, all of which would result in the emergence of a new sensibility.
